Helen Emilia (Kalada) Soll

February 8, 1914 ~ January 2, 2014 (age 99) 99 Years Old

Helen Soll, born Helen Emelia Kalada

February 8, 1914 – January 2, 2014

Predeceased by her loving husband, Sam Soll, four sisters (Eva Rogalovich, Ann Hampton, Julia Savage, and Ruth Scherer) and four brothers (John Kalada, Adolph Kalada, Michael Kalada, and Andrew “Rudy” Kalada). Helen is survived by her brother-in-law, Morris Scherer, sister-in-law, Joyce Kalada and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Helen was born in Scranton, PA and moved to Binghamton, NY at 6 years of age. When she graduated from Woodrow Wilson School in the midst of the depression, she immediately went to work cleaning houses to help support her large family. At the age of 16 she got a job at the cigar factory and then at the age of 17 she joined the work force of Endicott Johnson Shoes, where she stayed 43 years. It was there she met her wonderful husband, Sam Soll. After a long courtship, Helen and Sam were married in 1950.

Helen lived with Sam in Vestal from 1952, where she had close relationships with her supportive neighbors for over 60 years. Helen and the family wanted to thank all her neighbors for their friendship and help, especially Tony Kosick and Dick Prentice (deceased).

Helen was an avid crossword solver and reader, her favorite subjects being the autobiographies and novels set in other cultures. She was a lifelong member of Ascension Lutheran Church. When able, she tended a large flower garden full of lilacs and many varieties of roses. However, she got her greatest enjoyment keeping in touch with her extended family and large circle of friends, who would often write and visit.

Friends may call at Ernest H. Parsons Funeral Home, 71 Main Street, Binghamton from 1-3 PM on Saturday, January 4th. A brief service will follow. To offer condolences or share a memory please visit parsonsfuneral.com. Interment at Ascension Lutheran Cemetery will be private. Helen asked that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice, as she felt there are so many in this world in need.
