(Sara) Sambursky, his niece, Claudia (Marceo) Blak and nephew Flavio Sambursky, all of Rio De Janeiro, as well as his brother in law and Sister in Law Ross and Leane Dicker and their children Robert, Meredith, and Matt Dicker.

In 1959 Jose Sambursky moved to Binghamton, NY from Rio de Janeiro and began his internship in Internal Medicine at Wilson Memorial Hospital.  He married Joyce Werner, his wife of 51 years August 14, 1960. He then completed a postgraduate ophthalmology program at the University of Pennsylvania and then entered an ophthalmology residency at Manhattan Eye and Ear Hospital, which he finished in 1963.  After completion of his residency he was awarded a fellowship in Advanced Anterior Segment Surgery and Retinal Surgery at the prestigious Barraquer Institute in Barcelona, Spain from 1963 to 1964.  Following his fellowship Jose and his wife, Joyce, and their two young children moved to Rio de Janeiro where he began his career in ophthalmology.  After 3 years Jose and Joyce moved their young family back to Binghamton, NY where he joined his father-in-law, George B. Werner, MD in the practice of ophthalmology establishing Ophthalmic Associates of the Southern Tier.  In 1971, his third son was born.  Jose S. Sambursky was a man dedicated to his family, his friends and his patients.  He loved the practice of medicine and was enthusiastic about teaching medicine to students and residents.  He saw patients not as just an eye but as an entire being and was skillful in both the medical and surgical care of each patient.  His passion was not restricted to just medicine; it overflowed into his love for soccer and family.  He coached all his children on and off the soccer field, teaching lessons of life as well as sport.  He coached Vestal Youth Soccer for many years, and he took two travel teams to Europe. He treated his players as family and served as a role model on and off the soccer field.  As an ophthalmologist he was always at the forefront of surgical techniques.  He was one of the first eye surgeons in the United States to implant an intraocular lens which is now a common practice during cataract surgery.  Also, he was the first in our region to offer patients corneal transplantation as well as being one of the first in all of New York.  Also, he gave back to our community by not charging patients who could not afford his care.  In addition, for most of his career he worked for one month a year in Brazil helping those less fortunate and bringing his expertise to South America.  He was passionate about teaching and was truly a complete ophthalmologist being great at many different aspects of the medical and surgical treatment of eye diseases. Later in his career, he incorporated an ocular diagnostic company with his sons which may transform how medicine will be practiced in the future.  Jose loved the arts and was a supporter of the symphony and opera.  He was a true renaissance man and he loved learning and sharing his knowledge with those around him.  His smile, charm and charisma which warmed us all will be sorely missed.  The family would like to thank all their friends and family for their unrelenting support and kindness over the last 6 months.  Also, the family would like to thank all the physicians and staff for their compassionate care and concern.  Funeral services will be held at Temple Israel at 2 PM on Monday November 7, 2011. The burial will be held at Temple Israel’s cemetery on Conklin Avenue following the service. The family will sit Shiva and receive family and friends Monday through Thursday from 7 to9 PM and Tuesday through Thursday from 2 to 4PM.  In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to The American Cancer Society, The Lourdes Foundation,The United Health Services Foundation, The Jewish Federation of Broome County , A.V.R.E. and Binghamton University Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders
