Katie (Hess) Haas

Haas, KatieBinghamton: Katie Haas, 98, of Binghamton, passed away August 28, 2013 at the Hilltop Campus, James G. Johnston Nursing Home. Born April 1, 1915 in Kassel, Germany the daughter of the late Margaret (Gotthelft) and Albert Hess. She is also predeceased by her husband, Walter. She owned and operated Walter's Shoe Store in Downtown Binghamton for 58 years. Surviving Katie are her sons, Donald (Robin) Haas, Vestal, and John David Haas, Nashville, TN; grandchildren, Jarred and Jackie, Adam, and Derek; and great-grandchildren, Rosie and Moira. She was a successful businesswoman, shoes salesperson extraordinaire, and a substitute teacher for 25 years in the Vestal school system. Katie emigrated from Germany in 1937 to follow the love of her life, who came in 1936. Walter and Katie were married in October 1938 and were happily married for 51 years. She lived her life for her children and grandchildren. She was one of a kind, the greatest mother and grandmother anyone could ask for. She was loved by all who knew her. After the store closed, she volunteered at the JCC and reluctantly gave that up at 93 after her eyesight began to fail. Katie loved the NY Knicks, selling shoes, and her family. The family wishes to thank her special caregivers, Liz and Donna, and the entire first floor staff of the James G. Johnston Nursing Home. Family and friends may call Friday from 12-2 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Ernest H. Parsons Funeral Home, 71 Main St., Binghamton, NY.
