Leonard F. Cohen of Binghamton
Leonard F. Cohen 89, of Binghamton, passed away peacefully at his home Sunday April, 29, 2012.
Born August 5, 1922 in Binghamton NY the son of the late Anna (Kahn) and Morris S. Cohen and loving husband of the late Shirley Greenhouse Cohen. He was also predeceased by his brothers; Philip Frankel, Leslie Frankel, and Charles Cohen.
Leonard graduated from Binghamton High School and earned his Bachelor's degree from Yale University, with honors, class of 1944. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. After being mustered out of the military Leonard married Shirley Greenhouse and returned to Binghamton. He joined the family shoe business that was founded by his father, and included Parlor City Shoe Co., Endicott Shoe Co., and Triple Cities Shoe Co. Leonard and his brother Charles were active in the business until their respective retirements. He was a lifelong member of Temple Israel, a past president of the Temple, past president of the Temple’s Men's Club, active in the Chevra Kadisha, and was the Temple Librarian for 20 years.. He was also active in the JCC Widow and Widowers Club as well as many civic activities including the Binghamton Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, and a volunteer mediator with ACCORD.
Surviving Leonard are his daughters and son-in-law; Ann Cohen of Binghamton, and Rochester, and Sharon and Philip Ferraguto of Arlington, MA.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday May 1, 2012 at Temple Israel, 4737 Deerfield Place, Vestal, NY at 2:00 P.M. with Rabbi Tziona Szajman officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the Temple. Internment will follow at Temple Israel-Riverside Cemetery Conklin, NY. The family will observe Shiva at the family home Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
