Rev. A. George Guba
Rev. A. George Guba, 79, died peacefully at home March 1, 2011 after an unexpected sudden illness. He was predeceased by his parents George H. and Irene Guba and daughter Katherine Zorn. George is survived by brothers Howard and Norbert Guba, sister Karin Meyer, his loving wife of 56 years Anne Guba, daughter Pamela (Steve) Brady, sons Michael (Kathy) Guba, George Guba , Eric (Jennifer) Guba, son-in-law John Zorn, and 8 grandsons, Chris Zorn, Sean Brady, Tim Zorn, Doug Brady, Greg Zorn, Wolfie Guba, Corby Guba and Auggie Guba.
Rev. Guba served 4 congregations throughout his career, Zion Lutheran, Dolgeville, N.Y. 1955-1960; St. Timothy Lutheran, Grand Island, N.Y. 1960-1967; Good Shepherd Lutheran, Rochester, N.Y., 1967-1973 and Redeemer Lutheran, Binghamton, N.Y., 1973-1992. He was named Pastor Emeritus in June of 1995 by Redeemer Lutheran. Rev. Guba retired after serving as the Dean of the ELCA Upstate NY Synod’s Southern Tier Conference from 1991-1996. He was active on the Metro Interfaith Board of Directors, the Rotary Club, and the on the Board of the Broome County Council of Churches.
George’s favorite activities included gardening, from tending to his wildflower lawn, to growing vegetables and planting trees. Despite his poor eyesight, he enjoyed keeping up with current events, studying his Bible and having conversations with his family and friends. His favorite place to be each summer was his cottage at Willsboro Point on the shores of Lake Champlain. He so much enjoyed his yearly connections with his childhood friends and his extended Willsboro family every summer.
The family offers special thanks to Dr. Jonathan Harris and Lourdes Hospice for their outstanding care. Calling hours will be Friday, March 4, 6-8 p.m. at Parson’s Funeral Home, 71 Main Street, Binghamton. A Memorial Service will be held at 11am Saturday, March 5, at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 499 Plaza Drive, Vestal, NY.
