Ruth Jane Conrad Garabedian, 84, of Binghamton, passed away at home on January 12, after a long illness. She was born and raised in Buffalo, NY where she graduated from Fosdick-Masten Park High School. She attended the University of Buffalo before marrying Vahe Garabedian and settling in Binghamton.
While running her household and raising her family, Ruth also found time to volunteer for many organizations. She was a longtime member of the Women’s Guild and the Ladies’ Aid Society of St. Gregory Armenian Church, the local chapter of the Armenian General Benevolent Union, and the Women’s Auxiliary of the Broome County Medical Society. She was also active for many years in the PTAs of the Alexander Hamilton and Horace Mann Schools and in the Monday Afternoon Club.
In addition to these endeavors, Ruth expressed her creative side in many different ways; knitting, sewing, and tailoring clothing for her family, making and designing needlepoint artwork, playing the cello, and ultimately painting in oils and pastels. It was this last art form that she enjoyed the most. Ruth spent several happy years traveling and painting with a close group of friends. She joined the Artists’ Guild, participated in many juried art shows, and received numerous awards for her works. While she found this creative expression to be very rewarding and fulfilling, Ruth enjoyed spending time with her family most of all.
She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Dr. Vahe Garabedian; children Valerie (Robert) Kalwas of Rochester, NY, Carol (Paul) Goulian of Ridgewood, NJ, Haig (Anne) Garabedian of La Grange, IL, Elizabeth Harendza of Havertown, PA, and Gwen (Michael) Kania of Endicott NY; grandchildren Alyssa (Robert) Stack, Katherine Goulian, William Kalwas, Michael and Elizabeth Garabedian, and Thomas, Kevin and Melanie Kania; two great-grandchildren; sisters June Fath and Marjorie Parker, brother-in-law Haig Garabedian, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her brothers William Conrad and Joseph Schultz.
Ruth was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, who was loved, admired, and respected by all who knew her.
Family and friends are invited to call from 4:00 to 7:00 pm Monday, January 16th at the E.H. Parsons Funeral Home 71 Main Street, Binghamton NY. Funeral will be 11AM at St. Gregory Armenian Church, 11 Corbett Ave. Binghamton. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St Gregory Armenian Church.
