Shirley Osmun
March 22, 2012
Born in Hackettstown, New Jersey, to Hazel and Harold Osmun, Shirley graduated from high school and then attended Montclair State College for her Bachelor's degree and Columbia University for her M.A. After a brief teaching experience, Shirley changed careers and worked for several social agencies in New York City, including the YWCA and the National Council of Churches.
In 1960, Shirley went to work at Robert College in Istanbul, Turkey, which she called the best experience of her life. Originally founded in 1864 to educate the Christian minorities of the Ottoman Empire, the college became an important educator of Turkish students in the Western tradition and maintains that position today.
In 1965, she returned to the U.S. and taught English at Broome Community College for Twenty years, retiring in 1985.
She was an active member of Christ Church, serving as choir member, lay reader, Eucharistic minister, and coordinator of the Church's CHOW Pantry.
For relaxation, Shirley enjoyed walking and swimming, and dinners and games with friends. Over the years, she enjoyed the company of several cats, who permitted her to share their space.
Her last years were spent as a resident of the Good Shepherd Fairview Home in Binghamton. Shirley appreciated the excellent care she received from staff members and the congeniality of the residents.
A Memorial Service to Celebrate her life will be held Tuesday April 10th, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at Christ Church , 10 Henry Street Binghamton, NY. Interment will follow in the Christ Church Memorial Garden. Arrangements are with the Ernest H. Parsons Funeral Home 71 Main Street, Binghamton NY.
