Shirley Tanenhaus, 91, of Binghamton, died Thursday, June 21, 2012. She was predeceased by her parents, Albert I. and Martha (Marks) Bauman; her beloved husband of 64 years, Marvin S. Tanenhaus; her son, Thomas Tanenhaus, M.D.; her grandson, Seth Sweeney; and her son-in-law, John J. Gavula. She is survived by her children, Beverly, Princeton, NJ; David (Teri), Binghamton; and Marta, Silver Spring, MD. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Adam Sweeney and Gabe Tanenhaus (Amanda), Tom Gavula, and Ariel and Becca Schwartz; and her great-grandchildren, Chloe, Nancy, and Georgia Sweeney and Conner, Maeve and Mairen Sweeney.
Born in Syracuse, NY in 1921, Shirley moved to Binghamton in 1947 when she married Marvin Tanenhaus. She had a lengthy career as a legal secretary, first working for Marvin and later for Atty. Stan Drazen. She served as President of Temple Israel Haddassah and also as President of Thomas Jefferson School PTA.
Of her many fine qualities, her most defining characteristic was her extraordinary capacity to connect with other people. She often said that meeting a new person was like opening a new book she was looking forward to reading. In addition to her immediate family, she had close personal relationships with her many nieces, nephews and friends which were warmly reciprocated.
A wonderful cook and dedicated homemaker, she created family events and holiday celebrations which served to bring together her family and friends. She was also an outstanding card player and a much sought after bridge partner.
Shirley will be treasured and never forgotten by her devoted family. The family wishes to acknowledge the compassionate professionalism of the caregiving staff of Family and Children’s Society and also Brenda Cave-James.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, June 24, 2012 at Temple Israel at 10AM. The family will receive callers at 9AM. Interment will be in the Temple Israel Cemetery in Conklin. Arrangement by Ernest H. Parsons Funeral Home, Inc. Shiva will be observed at 97 Aldrich Ave., Binghamton, on Sunday and Monday evenings from 5:30PM to 7 PM.
