OBITUARY
STANLEY WALTER BLUMM OF Vestal, New York & Sebring, Florida, age 97, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on April 7, 2016 in Binghamton, New York, surrounded by his loving family.
STANLEY was born in New York City on Armistice Day, November 11, 1918, to Stanley W. Blumm, Sr. & Inez Levy Blumm.
At age 19, Stanley moved to Chicago where he lived & worked until he entered the service in World War II. After a brief courtship, he married Dorothy Yokel, also of New York City, on October 8, 1940. He entered the United States Army Air Corps in February of 1942 & served as a navigation instructor on the B-24 [bomber] aircraft. His son, Robert “Buzz” Blumm was born at the Monroe Air Force base on May 7, 1944.
In 1945, he was discharged from active duty & moved to Binghamton, New York. Stanley’s second son, Richard Steven was born there on May 24, 1947.
He first worked for Cary & Company of Binghamton where he excelled in sales & was promoted to National Sales Manager. In 1961 Stanley purchased Arnold Meyer Signs in 1961, and over a period of 22 years he grew it from a small sign shop to one that employed over 80 people.
One of his passions was flying and he became instrument rated in 1971 & obtained his commercial license in 1986.
He was Chairman of the Broome County Airport Advisory Committee for 13 years and also served as president of the National Electric Sign Association and served on the Binghamton Commission of Architecture & Urban Design. He was a lifetime member of SERTOMA [Service to Mankind] & served as a volunteer Boy Scout leader for the Susquenango Council. He was a founding member of Temple Concord, a member of the Sebring Elks, the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association and the United Flying Octogenarians.
After 30 years of marriage, Stanley & Dorothy were divorced in the early 1970’s. In 1975 he married Pauline Kennedy of Binghamton. Stan & “Polly” moved to Sebring, Florida in 1984 where they lived together until Polly’s death in 2011. During that time, they travelled extensively throughout the United States, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Japan,etc. Stan continued to live in Sebring until he moved back to Binghamton in 2015.
During his 31 years in Sebring, he continued to fly, & conducted many volunteer “Angel [Life] Flights” throughout Florida
Stanley was an extremely social guy, making friends at every aspect of his life and travels; his total honesty and attention to detail were legendary. He will be dearly missed by his family and all who were acquainted with him.
Stanley was preceded in death by his first wife Dorothy in 2007 & by his second wife Polly in 2011. He is survived by his sons Robert “Buzz” Blumm of Eugene, Oregon & his wife Cecile, 5 children & 6 grandchildren, and by Richard Blumm of Bethesda, Maryland; Step-daughter Kerrie Doyle Smothers & husband Roger Smothers & their 3 children, stepson Patrick Doyle & his wife Debbie & their 3 children, and by his sister Enez Hart of St. Petersburg, Florida & her husband Edwin Hart.
Funeral services will be held at Temple Concord, 9 Riverside Drive, Binghamton, NY on Monday April 11, 1 pm. The family will receive friends in the library from 12:00 noon until 1:00 pm.
