Thornton W. Whipple

Thornton W. Whipple (6/14/1913 - 10/8/2014). He is survived by three sons, William of Philadelphia, Robert of Rochester, and Frederick of Fullerton CA, and three grandchildren, Christopher Whipple of San Francisco, Priscilla Belluccio of Rochester, and Julianna Whipple of Fullerton CA.
Ted graduated from Binghamton Central High School in 1931, and from Union College in Schenectady, NY with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1935.  He took post graduate courses from Broome Community College in finance and marketing. He entered his family business of Whipple's Wholesale Automotive Supplies until he volunteered for the US Army in 1942. He served as a Combat Engineer in the European Theater, and was honorably discharged in 1945 with the rank of Captain.
From 1945 to 1962, he was employed by E.H. Titchener & Co., and became Vice-President for Sales. For three years he was Special Projects Manager of Marketing for Universal Instruments Corporation before starting his own business of Whipple Marketing Services.
He served on several Boards of Directors including Roberson Center for the Arts and Sciences, Susquehanna Valley Home, Tri-Cities Opera, and The Fine Arts Society of the Southern Tier.  He became President of the Sales and Marketing Executive Club of the Southern Tier, The Live Wire Club of Broome County Chamber of Commerce, and was a Deacon, Elder, and Clerk of Session of the First Presbyterian Church of Binghamton, NY.
Musically inclined, he started and conducted several singing organizations including The Short Circuits of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, The Clef Club, and was Choir Director of the All Saints Episcopal Church of Johnson City. He was song leader for the Binghamton Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow of that organization.
Nearing retirement age, he started painting and became a member of the Spectrum Art Gallery of Vestal, NY, The Stephen's Square Art Gallery, and The Artist's Guild of Binghamton, NY. He was an active Workshop Director for The Painting Holidays Organization and conducted artist-led trips to numerous countries where he painted using the water color medium. In winter, Ted painted local scenes in the Southern Tier using a portable art studio in a converted VW Bus.
Burial will be in the Whipple Mausoleum at the Floral Park Cemetery.  A Memorial Service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 42 Chenango Street, Binghamton, NY on Monday October 20 at 11 o'clock.  Family members will receive guests in the Library Lounge of the church one hour prior to the service.
